JUNE 8, 2023:
Over the last three years, the Stanley County Student Council has been involved in a project collecting denim jeans, which are recycled and made into home insulation.
To date, 15,454 pieces of denim, weighing 20,301 pounds have been packed into 513 boxes, with 6,800 jeans weighing 8,933 pounds. This will be a continuing student council project and will be guided by Ms. Allison Bender, the incoming student council advisor.
AUGUST 24, 2022:
For the third year in a row, the Stanley County Student Council will be participating in a collection drive through “Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green” TM program. Being made mostly from cotton, the denim is converted to natural cotton fiber insulation for houses and pet bedding. Not only is the student council getting denim from members of the community, but is also acquiring unsalable denim from the Countryside Hospice Thrift Store in Pierre, saving them valuable monies that are not spent on disposal fees.
Some members of the council are pictured with a sampling of jeans collected last spring before students mailed off 5,029 pieces of denim, weighing 6,428 pounds. In total, the Stanley County Student Council has mailed off over 9,000 pieces of denim to be converted into insulation, conserving space in the local landfill. Council members will continue the collection throughout the 22-23 school year.
Community members who wish to take part in the program may drop off denim at the Stanley County High School or call 605-223-7743 to arrange for a pickup.

NOVEMBER 13, 2020:
The Stanley County School Student Council is collecting donations of denim as part of the “Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green” TM program.
The denim is sent away, free of charge, to be turned into insulation for structures. The program also reduces the amount of denim taking up space in landfills.
As long as it is at least 90% cotton with all paper and plastic removed, Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program is able to repurpose the denim. Any type of denim apparel may be recycled– jeans, jackets, shirts, skirts, etc.. It can be colored, embellished and/or printed. The denim can also be in any condition– ripped, stained or scraps.
Being mostly made from cotton, a sustainable fiber, denim can be converted to natural cotton fiber insulation used in building efforts around the country. So far in 2020:
- 34,375+ pieces of denim have been collected
- 17+ tons of waste has been diverted from landfills
- 8,750 Square Feet of UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation has been manufactured
Please send your unwanted denim with any Stanley County School student, drop it off at the High School office or call 605-223-7743 to arrange for it to be picked up. The last day to drop off donations is Dec. 17.
