SIOUX FALLS – Larry Luitjens, South Dakota’s winningest boys high school basketball head coach, passed away Saturday at 81.
Luitjens’ career spanned from the late 1960’s into the early 2010’s with 748 wins and seven state championships. He led De Smet to the 1970 and 1971 Class B titles and guided Custer to five state wins in 1990, 1992, 1993, 1998 and 2002. At Custer, Luitjens’ teams competed in 13 state championship games and 14 state tournaments.
Luitjens was Custer’s boys head coach from 1973 until his retirement in 2014.
