A member of the “greatest generation” from Sanborn County celebrated a milestone with a “boat-load” of family and friends over the weekend (June 11, 2023).
100 year old World War Two, US Navy veteran Bob Hendrix enlisted in the Navy in the summer of 1941. Hendrix served aboard several aircraft carriers and was awarded the Bronze Star after surviving a Kamikaze hit aboard the USS Randolph.
South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson was on hand to thank him personally for his service.
Hendrix was discharged in 1947 and returned to the Artesian area in rural Sanborn County and farmed for decades. He was married to his wife Mildred for 68 years until she passed in 2014. Hendrix was able to feed cows until he was 91. He now resides at Countryside Living in Mitchell.
