The Walworth County Commissioners heard the results of the Legislative Audit of the County’s 2020 and 2021 financial years during Thursday’s (September 21st) regular meeting. Jason Hill with the South Dakota Department of Legislative Audit went over a list of audit findings for those years. Hill said the first problem was annual reports not being completed during that time.
Hill said inadequate bookkeeping made the County appear to not have had any revenue coming in.
Hill went over several more violations and issues that have now been corrected and in moving forward the County Auditor’s office will be more organized with a checks & balances system in place. Hill also said that annual reports must be prepared and published so that the general public can see the county’s financial activity.
Sylvia Chapman, who has been working with the county and legislative audit to get the books in order, has a positive outlook on the County’s future financial reports as long as there is communication, openness, and no secrets.

Commissioner Scott Schilling and Commissioner Kevin Holgard voted against that motion.
