It’s Public Power Week and when it comes to electric service in Pierre, it’s a safe bet it’ll be available when you need it.
According to data compiled from the American Public Power Association’s eReliability Tracker service, those served by Pierre Municipal Utilities experienced an average of 5 minutes of power outages last year (2022). Because that, Pierre received the Excellence in Reliability award from the APPA.
Nationally, 84 minutes of power outages each year, for the last five years, is the average of customers of the top 25% most reliable electric utilities.
Mayor Steve Harding says in recent years, the city has put a priority on maintenance and modernization of our infrastructure. He says he’s proud all the work has been done without raising rates for the past five years.
Pierre doesn’t generate power. It purchases electricity from the Western Area Power Administration and Missouri River Energy Services; both are not-for-profit wholesale power providers. The City of Pierre does own three substations that work in conjunction with one federally-owned substation. Together, they distribute electrical power to approximately 7,330 Pierre utility customers.
