James Speck from Pierre has been awarded a $6,500 scholarship from the Ruth Karim Endowment to further his education at Capital City Campus (CCC). Speck is pursuing a career in nursing, following six years of service in the Army National Guard.
Speck notes that the scholarship allows him to continue his nursing studies locally at CCC and allows him to serve his community in the future. “I thank the Capital City Campus, Avera, and the Karim family for allowing me to continue my journey to be the best nurse that I can be,” he says.
The Ruth Karim Endowment is administered by the Avera Foundation. The scholarship was established to honor Ruth and her commitment to saving unborn children. The history of the foundation started in Iraq, when Ruth’s husband, Mansour Karim, gave a penny to a beggar in his home country. He prayed that someday he would be able to help others in a meaningful way. Today, that legacy lives on through this scholarship and other projects in the Pierre area.
