NOVEMBER 7, 2023:
The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association (SDCA) will host the 75th Annual Convention and Tradeshow November 28-29, 2023, at the Ramkota Hotel and Watertown Events Center in Watertown, South Dakota.
The SDCA’s Annual Convention and Trade Show provides a forum for members and non-members to network with fellow cattlemen, craft the policy that will guide the SDCA staff and leadership in the coming year and learn more about the latest industry happenings.
This year, the Convention is focused on partnerships that were key to growing the cattle industry in South Dakota, the collaborations that make it successful today, and the partnerships that will ensure the industry continues to thrive in the future.
The first day of the Convention, November 28th, will feature the first seminar of the Cattlemen’s Education Series, sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association. The panel features ag industry leaders and partners within South Dakota’s academic institutions working together on innovative advancements within the industry, train tomorrow’s workforce, and expand markets and profitability for producers, panel includes:
- Dakota State University + Case New Holland
- South Dakota State University + AgSpire
- Western Dakota Technical College + Wall Meats
The SDCA policy committee meetings will also take place on the day. The committees will craft resolutions to address new and existing policies and make recommendations to the membership on policy that will govern the organization in the year to come.
End the evening with The Best of Beef Happy Hour and the new Merck Roping Contest Powered by the Lake Area Technical College Agriculture Department! Attendees, vendors, and the public are invited to attend Happy Hour event will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres that showcase the best of beef, cocktails, networking, and celebrating our industry partners. After the social grab a partner and showoff your roping skills at a friendly competition with fellow cattlemen and women. The event is open to attendees, vendors, and the public.
Day two of the Convention and Trade Show will kick off at breakfast and include a market update from Duane Lenz of Cattle Fax.
SDCA’s annual business meeting will he held. SDCA members will hear association updates, conduct business, and vote on proposed bylaw amendments. After the lunch recess, the annual policy business meeting, will take place. Members of SDCA will vote on association policy and elect a new slate of officers for 2024.
The keynote luncheon sponsored by First Dakota National Bank will feature speaker Glen Newcomer. An Ohio native, Glen currently oversees seven business entities that make up Newcomer Farms. What began in 1866 as the original homestead is now a 6th generation cash grain operation that has diversified to include a seed dealership and crop insurance agency. Glen shares his story about how a near fatal accident inspired him to create a unique business advisory board made up of professional people outside of the industry. The advisory board meets quarterly with an emphasis on transitioning the farm to the next generation, succession, and estate planning, and thinking about the business from a different perspective.
The second seminar of the Cattlemen’s Education Series builds on the keynote address, helping producers build their own business team. Moderated by Don Schiefelbein, past president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and owner and operator of Schiefelbein Farms in Minnesota. The panel features:
- Kyle Peters, A1 Development
- Kiera Leddy, lawyer at Siegel, Barnett & Schutz
- Alan Hojer, manager and legacy consultant of “Keep Farmers Farming” a division of First Dakota National Bank
- Heather Gessner, Extension Field Specialist Livestock Business Management at SDSU Extension.
The Convention finale, The Cattlemen’s Banquet, will be held the evening of November 29th, where the Cattleman of the Year and the Friend of SDCA awards will be honored. The highlight of the banquet is the presentation of the 2023 Leopold Conservation Award to the Slovek Ranch of Philip, South Dakota. The night will conclude with the SDCA President’s Auction.

The convention programming will highlight the partners that support operations, those who provide services producers rely on, and the partners that are working to strengthen the industry to face future challenges.
