NOVEMBER 9, 2023:
NorthWestern Energy’s joint $7.8 million Chamberlain switchyard project is being completed this month (Nov. 2023).
NorthWestern Energy is working jointly with East River Electric, an electric cooperative based in Madison, South Dakota. The new switchyard will provide redundancy and increase reliability on the transmission system that serves customers in the area.
NorthWestern Energy recognized the opportunity for improvements with our local and regional partners. Work has been in progress in the Chamberlain area since 2021, when a substation transformer was replaced and upgrades were made to both transmission and distribution infrastructure serving the area, said NorthWestern Energy Director of South Dakota/Nebraska Operations Brad Wenande.
“The switchyard project will provide even better service reliability for our customers in the area,” Wenande said.
“It was a great accomplishment to partner with East River Electric and utilize our transmission systems already in place to make this reliability enhancement project economic,” said NorthWestern Energy Division Manager Jamie Hajek. “We listened to the feedback from communities served from this area of our system and followed through with a significant investment that will provide reliability benefits to our customers from Mt. Vernon to Chamberlain immediately.”
APRIL 28, 2023:
NorthWestern Energy’s $7.8 million new Chamberlain switchyard project will increase capacity to provide reliable service for customers in the Chamberlain area.
NorthWestern Energy is working jointly with East River Electric Cooperative and Central Electric Cooperative. The new switchyard and East River’s new substation are being built on 10 acres located southeast of the City of Chamberlain near the intersection of 249th Street and 345th Avenue.
Work will begin in May 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Some traffic detours and delays will be required for the safety of the public and crews working on the upgrade.
The new infrastructure will increase reliability and provide uniformity on the transmission system that serves customers in the area through the joint effort of NorthWestern Energy and East River Cooperative.
Watch for “Utility Work Ahead” signs which alert people that crews are working in the area. The company appreciates the public’s cooperation and patience when traffic detours or delays are needed for the safety of both the public and crews.
