WINNER, S.D. — The Pierre Governors bounced back from a Saturday loss and won a game in a familiar fashion Tuesday night (Jan. 9, 2024), as they came from behind to beat the Winner Warriors in overtime, 60-55.
In what seems to be their recent recipe for success, Pierre again used timely shooting and offensive rebounding, not to mention some good defense when they needed it most to rally for a hard-fought victory. Winner got off to a fast start scoring the game’s first eight points and they held a 27-21 lead at halftime.
Aiden Barfuss led the charge with 16 first half points on the way to a game high 23, but the Governors seemed to defend him a little better in the second half. Shawn Hammerbeck was still strong throughout, though, as he scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Warriors. The Pierre rally began in the third quarter as they took a 40-39 lead to the final stanza, but a pair of Jett Zabel baskets were needed to send the game to overtime tied at 48.
Dawson Getz then hit two treys and two game-icing free throws to help the Govs to a 12-7 advantage in extra time. Luke Olson led Pierre with 18 points, Zabel added 17 with 14 rebounds and Getz finished with 15 including eight in overtime.
The Govs improve to 6-3 on the season and will host Douglas Tuesday in their next action. Winner is now 6-2 and will entertain Lyman on Tuesday.
