PIERRE – The Pierre Post 8 Legion Baseball team is preparing to venture into the new season with a new head coach. A statement released Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2024) from the Legion Board of Directors announced former player River Iverson has been appointed to lead the Legion squad beginning with the upcoming campaign.
Iverson played for Post 8 through the 2020 season and has coached in the system for the past three years. He coached the 15/16 team for two years and was an assistant for the top level Legion team last year. The Board expressed their support of Iverson, having been involved in the Legion program for several years running as both a player and coach. He succeeds Coach Brian White who led the program for the past nine seasons, earning eight State Tournament berths. White’s 2017 bunch won the State Legion title, Pierre’s first since 1969, and he continues to serve as head boys basketball coach and Athletic Director for Sully Buttes High School in Onida.
In other Legion Baseball news, player registration for the upcoming season will take place this coming Monday evening (Jan. 29, 2024), from 5:30 to 7:00, at the American Legion Cabin in Pierre. The registration fee is $50 per player and checks can be made payable to Post 8 Baseball. New players to the program are asked to bring a copy of their birth certificate as well.
