South Dakota Wildland Fire, in coordination with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, is planning a prescribed burn at the Belle Fourche Reservoir, about nine miles northeast of Belle Fourche on Friday (May 3, 2024).
Firefighters plan to burn approximately 300 acres in a state Game Production Area (GPA) on the northeast side of the reservoir bordering reservoir water. It is expected to be a one-day burn. Crews will mop up and monitor as long as necessary to ensure the fire is extinguished.
Objectives of the burn are to reduce the built-up thatch layer, reduce invasive cool season grasses, promote the growth of warm season grasses, and provide safe and quality training for firefighting staff.
Fire treatment also reduces the hazardous buildup of debris and dead vegetation, which can fuel wildfires.
Weather conditions will be monitored closely to ensure conditions align with objectives for the burn.
Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas and can linger for several days after the prescribed burn has been completed. Fire crews will secure, patrol, and monitor fire lines as appropriate for public and firefighter safety.
