Fort Pierre Mayor Gloria Hanson received a Community Leader Award from Missouri River Energy Services during its 59th Annual Meeting earlier this month (May 8, 2024).
MRES Board Chair Vernell Roberts noted that Hanson has tirelessly advocated for Fort Pierre and actively participates in several local organizations. He said as mayor, Hanson interacts daily with staff and the community while also making time for frequent radio interviews and writing monthly columns to help keep residents of Fort Pierre updated on the work the city is doing.
Roberts said Hanson also volunteers her time as an MRES Ambassador, proactively raising awareness of public power and the value of joint action through MRES. He says it’s important to recognize people like Mayor Hanson who serve in community leadership positions for the benefit of the communities in which they live.
Hanson, born and raised in Fort Pierre, first joined the city council in 2012. In 2014, she was elected mayor, a position she has held for the past 10 years. She was nominated by City Finance Officer Roxanne Heezen and former Fort Pierre Municipal Utilities Director of Public Works Rick Hahn.
According to MRES, the Community Leader Award was established in 2003 to honor local officials from their member communities who have provided many years of service to their communities and public power systems.
MRES is an organization of 61 member municipalities in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Each member owns and operates a municipal electric utility. MRES provides its members with wholesale electricity and a wide range of energy-related services.
