The Pierre City Commission has rejected the only bid it received for guardrails to be placed near electrical equipment located along East Fourth Street.

APRIL 17, 2024:
The Pierre City Commission has approved a request to bid guardrails to be placed near electrical equipment located along East Fourth Street.
City Utilities Director Brad Palmer says the electrical infrastructure along Fourth Street are large, expensive and electrified.
The bid deadline is May 9, 2024. If the bids come back favorably, the goal is to have the project completed by the end of September.
The Pierre City Commission also approved a $72,000 expenditure that Electrical Superintendent Devin Harris says would be used to build a storage space to protect supplies currently stored outdoors by the city’s electric shop.
Harris says the weather degrades the material, so the pipe’s shelf life will be enhanced considerably if it can be stored in a way that it’s protected.
Construction is expected to begin this month and be complete before the end of summer.
WRITTEN VERSION:
The City of Pierre prides itself on providing its customers with a reliable source of electricity. With more and more things that have become part of daily life for many people requiring being plugged in to charge, town officials are hoping to take some additional steps to protect its electrical equipment.
The city commission approved a request to bid guardrails along East Fourth Street. If bids come back favorably, the guardrails will be placed adjacent to two different electrical transmission poles and in front of an electrical switch.
City Utilities Director Brad Palmer says the electrical infrastructure along Fourth Street has received damage from vehicles. He says these pieces of equipment are large, expensive and electrified, so the guardrails will help protect the infrastructure, as well as the motoring public.
The bid deadline is May 9, 2024, with the goal of project completion by the end of September this year.
The Pierre City Commission also approved a $72,000 project to build cold storage at the city’s electric shop.
Palmer says currently they have conduit stored outside. He says the weather degrades the material, so the pipe’s shelf life will enhance considerably if it can be stored in a way that it’s protected from the weather.
Construction is expected to begin this month and be complete before the end of summer.
