An important function of the Beef Checkoff Program is to expand demand for U.S. beef internationally, and two of the largest destinations for U.S. beef are South Korea and Japan. Kentucky beef producer and Cattlemen’s Beef Board Chair Andy Bishop is part of a delegation of beef industry leaders from 10 states who are visiting Korea and Japan to get a firsthand look at how U.S. beef is promoted in the region. The group also met with buyers and distributors of U.S. beef and learned about emerging consumer trends.
Speaking from Tokyo, Bishop explains that many U.S. beef cuts that would be underutilized in the domestic market are very popular with Asian consumers. He notes that this has a positive impact on carcass value, citing the latest (March) export results in which beef export value reached nearly $890 million and equated to $454 per head of fed slaughter.
The Beef Leadership Team’s activities in Asia were organized by the U.S. Meat Export Federation. A list of participants is available HERE.
