Seven more people have successfully completed the Sixth Judicial Circuit’s Treatment Court program. They were recognized during a graduation ceremony this week (May 15, 2024) at the State Capitol Rotunda in Pierre.
Stanley County State’s Attorney Tom Maher says the program and its name have evolved over the years.
Maher says one aspect of the intensive, roughly 1.5 year long program that hasn’t changed, however, are in the three legged stool approach– show up, try and be honest.
Maher says treatment courts are an effective strategy for treating substance abuse and mental illness while reducing recidivism and saving taxpayer dollars. He says treatment courts prove it is possible to repair lives, reunite families, reduce drug use and crime, and to do so at far less cost than jail or prison time.
