MAY 31, 2024:
The US Geological Survey website now says it was a 3.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred Thursday afternoon (May 30, 2024, 2:39pm CT) about 24 miles north of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Oliver Boyd is a Research Geophysicist with USGS. He told DRG News that they don’t have much earthquake monitoring equipment stationed in South Dakota.
Initially reported as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake, Boyd explains what that means as far as strength.
As far as what may have caused the earthquake…..
Boyd says we may feel some aftershock.
Boyd encourages people to go to the USGS website to provide information about what they experienced.

MAY 30, 2024, 4:30pm CT UPDATE:
The force of the earthquake most likely did no damage to the Oahe Dam located about 6 miles north of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Eileen Williamson is the Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Northwestern Division. She says they have procedures in place to handle this type of event.
Coincidentally, Williamson says Friday (May 31, 2024) is National Dam Safety Awareness Day.

The US Geological Survey website says there was a 4.0 magnitude earthquake Thursday afternoon (May 30, 2024, 2:39pm CT) north of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan says USGS told him the center of the “seismic tremor event” was about 24 miles north, northwest of the two towns.
Callahan says people felt the quake for miles and miles.
