The Walworth County Commission conducted a land lease auction during its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 11th, 2024. Commission Chairman Jim Houck and Deputy Auditor Deb Kahl gave the specifics.
Bidding began at $600 and Jake Opheim had the winning bid at $1,000 a year. The land is not to be subleased.
During Public Forum, Pam Wells had a couple questions on tax deed properties. She had seen a property listed with two different owners. Deputy Auditor Kahl clarified that one name was the previous owner, and the other name is the current owner. Wells also asked about property sold at auction and if the county profits from it. Kahl explained where the money goes.
Also during Public Forum, Linda Beamann asked the commission why time clocks are not currently in use, which opened up some discussion about the pros and cons of using time clocks in the different offices and departments.
For the Highway Department, the commission approved the hiring and wages of Chad Perman. They also approved the Chairman to sign the Web Occupy Right of Way, and they decided to wait until after a final meeting of an advisory board to decide on acceptance of the Master Transportation Plan.
The commission discussed the county’s nepotism policy, with a majority of the board agreeing that it should stay in effect as is and look at any hirings on a case by case basis.
For the Auditor’s office, the commission approved putting Hannah Dryer’s name on the Bank West account.
The commissioners approved two plats from Planning & Zoning – the Schaefer Addition and the Riverview Addition.
Under New Business – Potter County will bring their bookmobile to Akaska two days a month.
The next Walworth County Commission meeting will be Tuesday, June 25th, at 9am.
