County auditors across South Dakota have finalized their post-election audit of the June 2024 primary election.
Of the state’s 66 counties, the tally shows 62 had no discrepancies, 10 didn’t need to do an audit because they had close races requiring a recount, 3 counties had 1 discrepancy and Minnehaha had 2 or more discrepancies.
Secretary of State Monae Johnson says the few discrepancies appear to be due to the manual counting looking at voter intent and not limiting their count to definitive marks within the ovals. For the most part, she says counties showed no discrepancies from the manually counted post-election audit to what was tabulated by machines on election night.
Johnson says the transparency of this process, conducted by audit board members from multiple parties, and the accuracy of the audit results should reinforce every voter’s belief that their vote mattered and was counted accurately. She says the county auditors are always going above and beyond and their hard work makes the voting process in South Dakota secure.
