Availability of healthcare is on the minds of many small town leaders in South Dakota.
This week (Aug. 19, 2024), the Fort Pierre City Council got an update on what’s happening at the Avera medical facilities on the Pierre side of the Missouri River.
St. Mary’s Regional President and CEO Shantel Krebs said having a good working relationship with Fort Pierre city leaders is important.
Krebs says St. Mary’s has 125 jobs to fill and a lack of affordable housing in the area is one obstacle to getting that done.
Krebs says lack of child care options is another frequently mentioned problem by applicants.
As far as staff that they do have, Krebs says Avera has around 100 doctors or care providers. In total, she says they have around 700 employees in Pierre and another 100 at the Avera Missouri River Health Center in Gettysburg.
Krebs says the Avera St. Mary’s payroll has about an $80 million impact on the area.
