SEPTEMBER 6, 2024:
A grand re-opening event was held Friday (Sept. 6, 2024) for the $6.7-million renovation and expansion project at the Oahe YMCA in Pierre.
Board President Connie Halverson talked about how the Y has changed since it was first incorporated in Pierre in 1971.
Pierre Mayor Steve Harding says the YMCA has been a partner with the city since 1978.
Oahe YMCA CEO Rachel Williams was less than four full days into her new role, but said she’s excited to be a part of a wonderful community facility.
On weekdays before 8am, Williams said YMCA patrons must enter through the doors that had been serving as the front entrance for the past several years. On weekdays from 8am until closing time, patrons may enter through either the original doors or the doors for the new addition.
The project includes a new gym, an expanded weight room with all new weights, a new seniors-only weight and track area, an expanded track and cardio center, a new space for children’s programming and a new day care center.
APRIL 21, 2023:
After being delayed for a few years because of COVID, the Oahe Family YMCA in Pierre is ready to start on Phase II of its expansion project.
CEO Aaron Fabel says the over $7-million project will expand their space to the east.
Fabel says Phase II construction won’t have much impact on the already crowded parking situation at the Oahe Family YMCA.
He says one goal is to get youth programs located together.
Fabel says the weight room will be moved.
Fabel says they have around $5.5 million dollars, so they’ll start a capital campaign next month (May 9, 2023) to raise the rest of the money.
They expect the project to be completed sometime next year (2024).
