SEPTEMBER 8, 2024:
The annual Walk of Hope Coming Together for Suicide Prevention event will be this afternoon (Sept. 8, 2024) at Hyde Stadium in Pierre.
Capital Area Counseling Service Prevention Specialist Jana Boocock says the Walk of Hope is held annually in Pierre to decrease the stigma surrounding suicide and behavioral health disorders, increase awareness of available community resources, and provide hope and healing to those struggling.
Behavioral health disorders are common, affecting 1 in 6 South Dakota adults. But for someone living with it, mental health and substance use disorders can feel isolating. People might be reluctant to talk about it due to stigma, shame or the fear of being judged. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in South Dakota. People considering suicide are often living with trauma, pain, addiction, or behavioral health disorders. However, help is available. We hope to emphasize this through our theme, No One Walks Alone.
All funds raised from the annual Walk of Hope support life-saving programming in Hughes, Stanley, Haakon, Jones, Lyman, Buffalo, Hyde, Sully and Potter counties and their communities. This includes:
- Training
- Awareness Campaigns
- Survivor of Suicide Loss Resources
- Prevention Curriculums
The Walk of Hope is our only fundraiser, and every dollar stays local to central South Dakota—a region with higher suicide rates. Together, we can make a difference.
