SEPTEMBER 11, 2024:
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Paying passengers have lined up to rocket to space to experience a few minutes of weightlessness. Now some are seeking a bigger thrill: spacewalking. The stage is set Thursday (Sept. 12, 2024) for the first private spacewalk when a tech billionaire and his crew will attempt the feat. To date, 263 astronauts representing a dozen countries have popped open the hatch. Experts say it’s inevitable that non-professionals will end up performing spacewalks and worry the wealthy could try to jump to the front of a spacewalking line with minimal training. For safety, the latest spacewalkers will always keep a foot or hand on the capsule.
SEPTEMBER 10, 2024:
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A billionaire has rocketed back into orbit, aiming to perform the first private spacewalk. Unlike his previous chartered flight, tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman shared the cost with SpaceX this time around. Isaacman, along with a pair of SpaceX engineers and a former Air Force Thunderbirds pilot, launched before dawn Tuesday (Sept. 10, 2024) aboard a SpaceX rocket from Florida. The four aim to reach new heights during their five-day trip, higher than the International Space Station. Isaacman and a SpaceX employee also plan to test their new custom suits with a spacewalk Thursday where they’ll always have a hand or foot touching the capsule.
