The blood supply in the region is once again critically low. LifeServe Blood Center Territory Representative Abbie Arneson says anytime there’s a holiday and they can’t hold blood drives, it creates a shortage in their supply.
Arneson says people can donate whole blood BEFORE Oct. 10, 2024, will be eligible to donate again during the 20th annual Tyler Wilcox Memorial Guns ‘n Hoses Blood Drive in December (Dec. 4-6, 2024).
For those who typically donate doubles, the deadline to do that and be eligible for Guns n’ Hoses has passed. Arneson says those people can still donate whole blood between now and Oct. 10.
Arneson says LifeServe is holding blood drives around central South Dakota this month (Sept. 2024). She says people can find a list of dates and locations, make
an appointment or fill out the health questionnaire, all from their website.
In January 2022, Avera switched it’s blood supplier from Vitalant to LifeServe, making LifeServe the only supplier of blood and blood products for all of Avera’s
hospitals in South Dakota– including the ones in Gettysburg, Miller and Pierre.
