SEPTEMBER 24, 2024:
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The man accused in the apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump wrote a note months earlier saying that he intended to kill the former president. That’s according to a detention memo filed by the Justice Department, which also said it plans to seek an attempted assassination charge. U.S. Magistrate Ryon McCabe agreed with the Justice Department that Routh should remain locked up. The note, addressed “Dear World,” was dropped off at the home of an unidentified person who contacted federal authorities following the arrest last Sunday of Ryan Wesley Routh. The box, which also contained ammunition, a metal pipe and other items, was not opened by the person until after Routh was taken into custody.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The man accused in the apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump wrote a note months earlier saying that he intended to kill the former president, the Justice Department disclosed Monday (Sept. 23, 2024) in arguing that he should remain locked up as the case moves forward.
The note, addressed “Dear World,” was placed in a box that was dropped at the home of an unidentified person who contacted law enforcement officials after last Sunday’s (Sept. 15, 2024) arrest of Ryan Wesley Routh.
The box, which also contained ammunition, a metal pipe and other items, was not opened by the person until after Routh was taken into custody. The person who received the box and contacted law enforcement was not identified in the Justice Department’s detention memo Monday.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job,” the note said, according to prosecutors.
An attorney for Routh didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment Monday morning.
SEPTEMBER 17, 2024:
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Florida law enforcement officials will launch their own criminal investigation into the apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump that will run parallel to the federal probe. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made the announcement Tuesday (Sept. 17, 2024). The governor said Florida prosecutors will pursue the most serious charges available under state law, including attempted murder, in the state-level investigation into Ryan Wesley Routh. The suspect was charged Monday with federal firearms offenses. It’s not uncommon for state and federal law enforcement agencies to run simultaneous investigations into crimes. States may be able to bring charges that are unavailable at the federal level — and vice versa.
SEPTEMBER 16, 2024:
KAAAWA, Hawaii (AP) — The man accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course wrote a book last year urging Iran to kill the former president. In his apparently self-published book, “Ukraine’s Unwinnable War,” Ryan Wesley Routh described Trump as a “buffoon” for both the 2021 Capitol riot and backing out of the Iran nuclear deal. Routh, who was charged on Monday (Sept. 16, 2024), once visited Ukraine and his online footprint showed that he tried to recruit fighters for Kyiv. It also outlined his shifting politics, noting he once voted for Trump before siding against him.
