SEPTEMBER 23, 2024:
The third annual ‘The 437 Project’ came through Pierre on Friday afternoon (Sept. 20, 2024) as part of the relay where a group of runners combined their efforts to cover the 437 mile stretch from the eastern side of the state to the line in the western side of SD. The 437 Project helps raise awareness and money to help support the state’s Helpline Center, which supports services provided by both the 211 and the 988 helplines. This year’s event raised over $315,000 ($315,711.33).
Friends and family gathered at a reception for The 437 Project.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2024:
The runners participating in the third annual “The 437 Project” run in South Dakota took off yesterday (Sept. 19, 2024) on the west side of the state and will make a stop in Pierre this afternoon (Sept. 20, 2024).
The runners are raising funds to help support the state’s Helpline Center, which supports services provided by both the 211 and the 988 helplines.
From 3-4pm at the American Legion Cabin (520 S Pierre Street) in Pierre, community members are invited to a reception for the runners and supporters.
Jessica Rumpca of Pierre is one of the 12 runners on this year’s team. She says she’s happy to see Pierre and other communities becoming aware of “The 437 Project.”
Rumpca is looking forward to her segments of the run.
Local food trucks will be selling food and beverages, and there will be yard games to play during the one-hour reception.
The name, The 437 Project, comes from the distance across South Dakota from east to west. Again, the run started Thursday and will finish Sunday (Sept. 22, 2024) in Sioux Falls.

MAY 7, 2024:
The third annual run for The 437 Project in South Dakota will be held in September, but runners and organizers have been preparing for months.
Jessica Rumpca of Pierre will be one of the 12 runners on this year’s team. She says she met some of her team during a runner’s retreat in Mitchell.
Rumpca says the “437” part of the name comes from the distance across South Dakota from east to west, but the number of miles the runners cover is more than that.
Rumpca says there are a lot of people involved in the run.
The 437 Project raises money for South Dakota’s 211 Helpline while also creating awareness for suicide prevention and mental health intervention.
You can find more information or make a financial donation to Rumpca’s efforts by going to https://the437project.org/. Each runner must find at least two sponsors who will have their logos placed on their running vests.
APRIL 22, 2024:
The 437 Project’s run across South Dakota this year (2024) will include a woman from Pierre.
Jessica Rumpca says the goal is to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.
Rumpca, who ran in the Boston Marathon in 2016 and again in 2017, became one of the team’s 12 members just by reaching out to the 437 Project organizers.
Rumpca says one of the most challenging parts of participating for her, doesn’t have anything to do with the running.
Rumpca says each of the 12 participants must get at least two jersey sponsors to take part in the run.
