Wednesday nights don’t usually host college football games with playoff implications, it is usually two schools that play in the MAC with a couple losses duking it out in front of a halfway full crowd. But last night we had a monumental upset seeing Kennesaw State (0-6) defeat Liberty (5-0) that ended more than just a win-streak.
The Liberty Flames went into last night’s matchup undefeated against a then 0-6 Kennesaw State Owls team who came in as a 26.5-point underdog. Going back to the 2023-24 season, Liberty had won 17 regular season games in a row and had their sights set on the final spot in this years 12-team playoff. Some Flames fans argued a year ago that the team should be considered as the fourth team in the playoff, but those notions all ended after they were obliterated by Oregon 45-6 in the Fiesta Bowl. But with the playoff expanding, and the 12th spot reserved for the best non-power four team, Liberty felt this was their year to make history and break into the playoffs. To do so, Liberty would need to go undefeated and beat each team convincingly.
Kennesaw State was able to run the ball with intent, but it was a couple late throws by sophomore Davis Bryson that set the Owls up in field goal range to make it a two-score game. The Owls took a 10-point lead with 4:13 remaining and they were able to hold off the Flames to get their first win on the season and end any hopes of a playoff berth Liberty had. Liberty had won 20-straight vs. CUSA teams, 11-straight in the month of October and 17-straight in regular season play. But this upset wipes all of that away and is truly devastating for Liberty.
