The official travel period for the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 2024) got off to a rough start for two law enforcement officers in South Dakota.
The Attorney General’s Office says Jackson County Sheriff Tucker Amiotte was injured in a vehicle crash on Interstate 90 and a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper was injured in a vehicle crash on Interstate 29 in Union County.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says the accidents are a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every time they are on duty. He says state law requires drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles parked on roadways.
According to the Associated Press, AAA predicts nearly 80 million people in the U.S. will go at least 50 miles away from home during the Thanksgiving holiday. Most of them are expected to travel by car between Tuesday and Monday.
