DECEMBER 5, 2024:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The acting director of the Secret Service is promising accountability for what he says is his agency’s “abject failure” to secure the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman opened fire on Donald Trump in July during his presidential campaign. Ronald Rowe is set to testify Thursday (Dec. 5, 2024) before a bipartisan House task force. A portion of Rowe’s remarks has been released before the hearing. Rowe says the Secret Service’s internal investigation identified failures by multiple employees. The task force’s review is one of a series of investigations and reports into the Butler, Pennsylvania, shooting that have faulted the agency for planning and communications failures.

AUGUST 28, 2024:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The gunman in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump searched online for events of both Trump and President Joe Biden and saw the Pennsylvania campaign rally where he opened fire last month as a “target of opportunity,” a senior FBI official said Wednesday (Aug. 28, 2024).
Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot at Trump from a nearby roof before being killed by a Secret Service countersniper, did extensive research for an attack before the shooting and had looked at any number of events or targets, including the current and former president, said Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office.
The new details were disclosed as FBI officials, in the latest in a series of briefings about the investigation, revealed that they had yet to uncover a motive for the July 13, 2024, attack in Butler, Pennsylvania, despite conducting nearly 1,000 interviews
“We have a clear idea of mindset, but we are not ready to make any conclusive statements regarding motive at this time,” Rojek said.
JULY 23, 2024:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The director of the Secret Service has resigned in the aftermath of the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. The shooting unleashed an outcry about how the agency failed in its core mission to protect current and former presidents. Kimberly Cheatle, who had served as Secret Service director since August 2022, faced growing calls to resign and several investigations into how a gunman was able to get so close to Trump at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Her departure is unlikely to end the scrutiny of the long-troubled agency after the failures of July 13, 2024. Cheatle’s deputy director was appointed as acting director.
JULY 22, 2024:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Secret Service’s director says the roof where a shooter opened fire at Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally was identified as a potential vulnerability days before the event. Director Kimberly Cheatle made the comments Monday (July 22, 2o24) as she was grilled by lawmakers over the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt of the Republican presidential nominee. Cheatle acknowledges the agency was told about a suspicious person “between two and five times” before the assassination attempt of the former president. Cheatle told lawmakers during a congressional hearing, “On July 13, we failed.” Cheatle was berated for hours by Republicans and Democrats, repeatedly angering lawmakers by evading questions about the investigation into the shooting.
