DECEMBER 12, 2024:
Designated officials from 60 of South Dakota’s 66 counties and eight of the nine Tribes will be adding travel advisory information to the state’s SD511 system this winter (2024-25).
State Department of Transportation Director of Operations Craig Smith says the participating Tribes and counties will be able to indicate areas where they advise no travel or where they have closed roads.
To help eliminate some confusion, Smith says all of the SD511 road condition information will also be sent to navigation/GPS app providers.
Specific to Interstate 29 and Interstate 90 in South Dakota, Smith says people can sign up to receive email or text notifications for road closure updates and travel advisories.
People can subscribe to receive text messages and/or email notifications by texting “SDinterstates” to 605-836-8836. Other points to note are:
- Information will not be shared about state highways through this text/email service.
- This text/email notification system sends out information, but is not able to receive it. Messages sent to this number will receive an automated response encouraging them to use SD511 for the latest road conditions.

DECEMBER 11, 2024:
Travelers who use the SD511 system to check for current road conditions on state and federal roadways are now able to see some of that same kind of information for many counties and most of the Tribes in South Dakota.
State Department of Transportation Director of Operations Craig Smith says the SD511 system is updated year-round and is accessible multiple ways.
Smith says they are currently partnered with 60 of the state’s 66 counties and eight of the nine Tribes to allow them to input current conditions in their jurisdictions this winter (2024-25).
However, Smith says, the information provided by counties and Tribes won’t be as detailed as the information SDDOT provides for state and federal roadways.

SD511 is the best source of information for “no travel advisories” or other road condition information on state and federal roadways in South Dakota.
DECEMBER 6, 2024:
Travelers in South Dakota who use the SD511 system to check for current road conditions on state and federal roadways are now able to see that same type of information for many counties and most of the Tribes.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation is currently partnered with 60 of the state’s 66 counties and eight of the nine Tribes to allow them to input current conditions in their jurisdictions this winter (2024-25).
SDDOT Director of Operations Craig Smith says county and Tribal officials will now be able to indicate areas where they advise no travel or where roads have been closed during severe storms. He says all of the restrictions will also be transmitted to navigation/GPS app providers, enabling travelers to plan and complete their trips more safely.
Users of the https://sd511.org website, mobile apps or the legacy 511 phone number, can receive information such as road closures, construction areas, blocked roads from accidents or incidents, weather forecasts and roadway camera images. The 511 phone number can be dialed toll-free anywhere in South Dakota. Callers outside of the state can dial 800-MYSD511 (800-697-3511) to receive the same information.
Smith says people can also subscribe, for free, to receive text messages and/or email notifications for road closure updates and travel advisories. He says the text notification system is for inclement weather-related closures on Interstate 29 and Interstate 90 in South Dakota. Other points to note are:
- Information will not be shared about state highways through this text number.
- Information will be focused on closures and reopening status for the Interstates. Again SD511 is the best source of information for “no travel advisories” or other road condition information.
- This text-in notification system is for information only (it is not designed to receive texts). Messages sent to this number will receive an automated response encouraging them to use SD511 for the latest road conditions.
