Three people were not seriously injured, but their home is considered a total loss after a fire in the 2800 block of East Irwin Street in Pierre Saturday morning (Dec. 28, 2024).
Pierre Volunteer Fire Department firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the home when they arrived on scene at approximately 10:30am. Because of the intensity of the flames, Fire Captain Nathan Dryden says firefighters initially launched a defensive attack from the exterior. He says they were eventually able to go inside the home to continue suppression efforts and extinguish hot spots.
Dryden says the fire appears to have originated in an addition to the home. He says investigators determined the cause to be accidental and no foul play is suspected.
Three residents were treated for smoke inhalation, but two dogs and one cat did not survive the blaze.
Pierre firefighters remained on scene for approximately 2.5 hours. Other agencies responding were AMR ambulance service, the Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department and local law enforcement.
