Mobridge City Councilman Randy Carlson appointed to the Walworth County Commission

A new year begins for the Walworth County Commission as Mobridge City Councilman Randy Carlson was appointed to the commission on Tuesday, January 7th.  Carlson took the oath of office and was sworn in as he replaces former Commissioner Kevin Holgard.  Also taking the oath of office on Tuesday were elected County Commissioners Justin Jungwirth and Duane Mohr, appointed State’s Attorney Sarah Malsom, appointed County Auditor Kim Dills, and appointed County Treasurer Leah Holder.

Commissioner Jim Houck was elected Commission Chair and Justin Jungwirth was elected Vice Chair.

The commissioners approved:

• Bank West as the designated bank for Walworth County;
• the Mobridge Tribune and the Selby Record as official newspapers;
• publishing a complete list of salaries effective January 1st, 2025;
• setting election officials’ hourly rate;
• leaving landfill rates the same as they were set in January 2024.  The rates will be revisited in July to discuss any changes that would be made in January 2026;
• a resolution on overweight limits;
• highway department equipment rates for 2025;
• indigent burial rates at $2500 plus outside container at cost if required, and $150 for a funeral director;
• a resolution setting salaries and the number of employees in the Walworth County Sheriff’s office;
• and a resolution to appoint a Wildlife Fire Division Designee – Commissioner Carlson volunteered to take on the position.

The commissioners tabled discussion on the State’s Attorney’s salary to their next meeting.

Board appointments were set.

Auditor

County Auditor Dills said the County balanced in December and mentioned the amount.

Dills informed Commissioners Carlson, Mohr, and Jungwirth that they need to fill out Conflict of Interest forms that will be sent to the Secretary of State.

Dills also told the commissioners that NECOG would like an at-large representative from the community to be on the board alongside Commissioners Houck and Jungwirth.  Houck said they will come up with a name by the next meeting.
