The Pierre City Commission has approved (Jan. 7, 2025) a request to bid the construction of another cell at the Pierre Regional Landfill.
Pierre City Engineer Nick Waters says construction of cell #4 includes the excavation of 220,000 cubic yards of dirt, which will be stockpiled for later use.
Waters says there is space for another 10 cells to be developed once cell #4 reaches capacity. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring.
The Pierre Regional Landfill accepts trash from communities and rural areas in seven different counties. Pierre bales trash to help optimize landfill space. It also has a recycling program and rubble debris pit to help minimize trash disposal needs.
