The Fort Pierre Knights of Columbus chapter, Little Flower Council #6117, will host its annual free throw contest on January 19th at 1 PM CST in the Stanley County High School Gymnasium (Parkview Auditorium). The Pierre Knights of Columbus chapter assists each year in putting the event on.
All children ages 9 through 14 are invited to participate. Contestants will vie for the championship within their gender and age group. Each shooter will take three warm-up shots, and then 15 consecutive free-throw attempts. The competitor with the most made attempts in each age group will earn the title of council champion, and advance to district level competition in Highmore. Those winners will compete for state honors. Winners from each age group will receive a commemorative basketball and a t-shirt.
“The annual free throw contest is the Fort Pierre Knights of Columbus’ biggest event of the year,” said Fort Pierre chapter Grand Knight Austin Goss. “The event has been a pillar in our community since its introduction, and has been the perfect way for kids and parents alike to come out and have some fun!”
Fort Pierre’s local free throw contest is part of a global contest put together by local Knights of Columbus chapters, the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Last year, several kids advanced from the local competition to both the regional and statewide competitions. Previous Fort Pierre-based participants have won the statewide competition.
Those interested in competing should plan to arrive at the Stanley County Gym at least 30 minutes ahead of the start of the competition, at 12:30 PM. For more information, contact Austin Goss at austingoss398@gmail.com.
