PRESHO, S.D. – A busy two-day stretch at the Lyman Gardens highlighted the wrestling weekend in Central South Dakota. The Canton boys came out on top in the tournament that has come to be known as the Mid-Dakota Monster over the years, scoring 246.5 points, led by three tournament champions and three runners-up. Tea Area placed second with 230.0 points. Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes was a close third at 225.5 with three champions – Gavin Braun (132), Iden Myers (150) and Lucas Lenz (165) – followed by Winner at 206.0, also with three champs – Apollo Willuweit (106), Karson Keiser (138), Ryken Orel (144). Both teams also had three wrestlers finishing second in their weight classes. Pierre scored 200.0 points to place fifth. The Governors were led by Elijah Boutchee who took the 215-pound championship, as well as runner-up finishers Gable Uhrig at 106 and Alex Oedekoven at 132. Other area team scores included Stanley County with 98 points, Lyman 54, Potter County 47, Sully Buttes 44.5, Mobridge-Pollock 25.5, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree/Tiospaye Topa 22 and Todd County with 16.
The girls version of the Lyman Invite, or the “Bride of the Monster,” also took place on Saturday, and Pierre topped the team standings with 205.0 points, 21 better than Canton in second place. Three champions led the Governors on the day included Dani Ringstmeyer at 120 pounds, Lexie Hillmer at 132 and Abbi Lewis at 152. Three more Governors took second place honors as well. Stanley County scored 54 points to place 10th and Sully Buttes tied for 12th with 41. A personal highlight came from Cateri Yellow Hawk of Sully Buttes who was honored after winning her 100th career match, on her way to a runner-up finish to Ringstmeyer of Pierre at 126 pounds.
