South Dakota corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2024, totaled 763 million bushels, up 5% from 2023, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Of the total, 510 million bushels are stored on farms, up 6% from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 253 million bushels, are up 1% from last year.
Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 168 million bushels, down 2% from last year. On-farm stocks of 77.0 million bushels are up 3% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 90.6 million bushels, are down 6% from 2023.
All wheat stored in all positions totaled 53.5 million bushels, up 22% from a year ago. On-farm stocks of 28.0 million bushels are up 27% from 2023, and off-farm stocks of 25.5 million bushels are up 17% from last year.
Oats stocks totaled 6.36 million bushels, up 1% from last year. On-farm stocks, at 4.50 million bushels, are unchanged from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 1.86 million bushels, are up 2% from 2023.
Barley stored in all positions totaled 193,000 bushels, down 29% from a year ago. On-farm stocks of 150,000 bushels are down 40% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks of 43,000 bushels are up 115% form 2023.
Sorghum off-farm stocks totaled 9.43 million bushels, down 3% from last year.
Hay stocks on South Dakota farms totaled 5.60 million tons on December 1, 2024, up 4% from a year earlier.
Grain storage capacity in South Dakota totaled 1.20 billion bushels, up 10 million bushels from December 1, 2023. Total grain storage capacity is comprised of 750 million bushels of on-farm storage, up 10 million from last year, and 445 million bushels of off-farm storage, unchanged from 2023.
