January 31, 2025:
A 38 year old woman from Hot Springs died and two children were injured when their vehicle collided with a farm tractor Tuesday morning (Jan. 28, 2025, 7:18am MT) four miles west of Hot Springs, SD.
Preliminary crash information indicates 47 year old Timothy James Hammel of Hot Springs was driving a New Holland tractor pulling farm equipment westbound on US Highway 18 near mile marker 29. At the same time, Judith Garland Wright, the driver of a 2011 Subaru Outback was approaching the farm vehicle from behind and collided with the rear end of the equipment.
Wright died on scene as a result of her injuries. Two juvenile passengers were buckled in child restraint systems. A 6 year old boy sustained life-threatening injuries and a 10 year old boy received serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The kids were transported to a Denver hospital.
Hammel had minor injuries.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The names of the persons involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
Preliminary crash information indicates the 47 year old male driver of a New Holland farm tractor was traveling westbound on US Highway 18 near mile marker 29 pulling farm equipment. At the same time, the woman was driving a 2011 Subaru Outback, approaching the farm vehicle from behind and collided with the rear end of the equipment.
The driver of the Subaru died on scene as a result of her injuries. Two juvenile passengers were buckled in child restraint systems. A 6 year old boy sustained life-threatening injuries and a 10 year old boy received, serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The kids were transported to a hospital in Denver. The driver of the tractor had minor injuries.
