Was last night’s game technically a “must-win” for the Govs girls? No. Their season did not rely on the outcomes of last nights game against Aberdeen Central, but at this point of the season, sitting at 4-4 going into the contest, head coach Kirk Beebout knew his team would benefit in a massive way from a win over a very good Golden Eagles team led by two six-footers in Lauryn Burckhard and Taryn Hermansen. Hermansen was an absolute force in the paint for Aberdeen, scoring 21-points and earning almost every rebound for Aberdeen. Hermansen was truly a treat to watch for everyone not in Governor Green. The Govs did, however, subdue Lauryn Burckhard for the most part, holding her to just 8-points. For the Govs, Lennix DuPris did what she does best and that’s driving the lane. DuPris was constantly finding herself in her sweet spot about 8-10 feet in front of the basket, scoring 28-points and making two critical free throws in the final seconds to extend the Govs lead to three. The Govs had a 9-point lead with less than one-minute remaining in the game, but Paiton Burckhard’s team didn’t go down without a fight. A couple huge three-pointers from Kamdyn Borge helped bring the Golden Eagles within striking distance, but one final stop by the Govs would secure the 56-55 win and improve them to 5-4 on the year. The Govs next game will come on the road at undefeated O’Gorman on Friday, we will be broadcasting that game live on KGFX & DRGnews.com.
On the road in Aberdeen, the boys team found themselves in a tight battle with the 2-8 Golden Eagles, trailing 14-12 after quarter one. But the game flipped in the second quarter when Pierre ripped off four steals that led to breakaway layups, Luke Olson facilitating three of them. At the half, the Govs led 27-22 and would hold of Aberdeen Central for the remainder of the evening. Olson led both teams in scoring with 29-points, a season-high for any Gov. Pierre also got a great performance out of Dawson Getz, who scored 15 with a three. For the Golden Eagles, they had two players in double-digits, Brendan Phillips with 14 and Jacob Weishaar with 15. The Govs improve to 4-6 on the season and look ahead to a huge matchup Friday at home against 9-2 Harrisburg. Brian Oakland will have that game live on River 92.7 & DRGnews.com.
