During his first formal address as the Governor of South Dakota, Larry Rhoden spoke about some of his goals for the state and how he and his administrative team will go about working toward those goals.
Rhoden’s Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 28, 2025) comments centered around keeping South Dakota “strong, safe and free.” He said two of the pillars of his administration will be civility and openness and responsiveness.
As the Senate Majority Leader, District 24 Senator Jim Mehlhaff of Pierre will work with Rhoden’s team on republican party priorities. Mehlhaff appreciated Rhoden’s interest in rebuilding relationships.

Audio PlayerRhoden said difficult conversations can be had but they can be done in a courteous manner. He also wants to repair state government relationships with the nine Tribes that have land within South Dakota’s borders.
Rhoden said his team will work from the budget Governor Kristi Noem proposed in December 2024, acknowledging the state is “in a tough budget situation, especially when it comes to ongoing money.”
