The 23rd Annual “Eagles and Bagels” Walk in the Park is being held Saturday, (Feb. 1, 2025) at the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area near Fort Pierre.
Erik Richter is the District Park Supervisor at Oahe Downstream for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. He says program attendees learn about bald eagles from a program presentation, then partake in a guided walk to view eagles and ask questions about them.
Audio PlayerRichter says participants should meet at 9am CT at the Group Lodge at Oahe Downstream. He recommends bringing a few items with you, if you have them.
Audio PlayerRichter says there’s no charge for the guided walk, but…..
Audio PlayerFollowing the hike, guests are invited back to the lodge for snacks and refreshments (sponsored by Dakotamart of Pierre and Fort Pierre).
The Oahe Downstream Recreation Area is located five miles north of Fort Pierre off SD highway 1806.
Incidentally, Campgrounds 1 and 2 at Oahe Downstream are currently closed to vehicle traffic to protect roosting eagles. While walkers and cross-country skiers are allowed into these areas, they must be careful not to disturb the roosting eagles. If disturbed, the eagles may abandon their roosts and use up valuable food reserves.
