PIERRE, S.D. (SDBA) — Video lottery expansion, school choice, and election law reforms headline the agenda for Thursday’s (Feb. 13, 2025) session of the South Dakota Legislature.
In morning hearings, the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee examines a bill allowing direct sales of home-processed poultry and pork, contingent on food safety training. The committee will also consider new permitting rules for lithium mining operations.
The Senate Commerce and Energy Committee takes up four gambling measures. These include proposals to increase video lottery machine numbers per establishment and betting limits. Senators will also weigh a constitutional amendment permitting mobile sports betting.
The afternoon floor sessions in both chambers focus on election integrity measures. House members are scheduled to debate changes to voter registration requirements and petition signature thresholds for constitutional amendments. Meanwhile, the Senate debates legislation mandating the reporting of government misconduct. It will also discuss a bill expanding school choice through tax credits.
The Joint Appropriations Committee must finalize general revenue fund targets today.
Thursday’s busy schedule precedes a three-day Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.
