Representative Brandei Schaefbauer of Aberdeen estimates COVID-19 caused $100 billion in damage in the U.S., so she’s introduced House Concurrent Resolution 6009. The measure calls for South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley to file a lawsuit against China and related parties for conducting “irresponsible and dangerous” research.
If successful, Schaefbauer says HCR 6009 would create a South Dakota COVID-19 Victims Relief Fund, offering up to $250,000 per person.
Skeptics raised concerns about the likelihood of success for such a legal challenge.
Proponents admitted the effort was likely a longshot, but as Representative Les Heinemann of Flandreau said…. it’s worth a shot.
The House passed HCR 6009 (Feb. 12, 2025) on a 40-28 vote.
A spokesman for the attorney general’s office said Jackley would honor the request of the Legislature should the Senate also pass the resolution.
