The Pierre Fire Department responded to a residential fire at approximately 6:00 PM on Monday, February 17, 2025, in the 700 block of South Polk. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke and flames coming from the mobile home.
Firefighters located the fire on the west end of the home and were able to stop any forward progression. “There was heavy smoke and some flames upon our arrival, said Fire Chief Ian Paul, we were able to knock the fire down from the exterior and move inside to continue to knock down remaining hot spots.”
Firefighters not only battled fire conditions but also worked in subzero temperatures. “The safety of our first responders is always top priority,” said Chief Paul, “the cold temperatures do add another degree of difficulty with our personnel and equipment.”
Two residents and one pet were displaced as a result of the fire. The residents were working with family and the Red Cross for temporary accommodations.
The home sustained heat damage to the west end and smoke damage throughout the remaining structure. The fire started on the outside of the home before moving under and into the home. The resident noted he was using a heating device to attempt to thaw out frozen water lines under his home. Investigators have determined the cause to be accidental. No foul play is suspected.
Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately 2 1/2 hours, with assistance from AMR, Ft. Pierre Fire, and local law enforcement.
