PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governors sank their first eight shots from the floor, including three from long range, to race out to an early double-digit lead, and they went on from there to defeat the Brookings Bobcats, 67-47. Pierre led 20-6 early, but a trio of treys from the Bobcats helped them keep pace at 22-14 after one quarter of play. Brookings would cut the deficit even further in the second period but the Governors built their lead back to ten by halftime at 38-28. Then Pierre took off to start the second half again, outscoring the Bobcats 25-6 in the third quarter to put the game away. Dawson Getz dropped in five 3-pointers and led the Govs with 17 points. Luke Olson fueled the third quarter run with 11 of his 13 points in that span and Lincoln Dilges added 12 for Pierre who improved to 6-10 on the season. Brookings (0-17) remained without a win on the season, but not for the efforts of Bergen Tetzlaff who led all scorers with 23 points. He added 12 rebounds, the majority of which came off the offensive glass, in the loss. Brookings hosts Aberdeen next on Friday while the Governors pay a visit to the Corn Palace in Mitchell to battle the reigning State AA Champion Kernels. Coverage on that game will begin with a 6:30 pregame on RIVER 92-7 FM with live video available at https://drgnews.com/river.
BROOKINGS, S.D. – A little over three hours east of Pierre, while the boys were cruising to their victory, the girls were in the midst of a shootout with the Lady Bobcats where it seemed like every possession ended up with points. The two teams were trading baskets all the way thru the first half, but the Bobcats took a two-point lead into the halftime break leading 34-32. The Govs were playing well, but they needed more offensive production than just from Lennix DuPris, who had 20 of the Govs 32 first half points. Whatever head coach Kirk Beebout told his Govs squad in the locker room worked, because Pierre came out on fire to start the second half. Molly Olson, who started for an injured Gracelyn Taylor, hit two big threes to help extend the Govs lead into double-digits as Pierre outscored Brookings 19-6 in the third. Emery Larson emerged in the second half with 14, and finishing with 22. Brookings did their best to claw back into the game, but DuPris and company weren’t having any of it. With the lead dwindling down to 8 with just under three minutes to go, Larson hit back-to-back threes that would prove to be the dagger as the Govs would close it out on top 72-59. They now look ahead to a massive regular season matchup on Friday night at home against 13-3 Mitchell. We will have the broadcast on KGFX beginning around 6:30, and the livestream here
