March 12, 2025:
The Hughes County Sheriff’s Office has suspended the daily active search for a missing Blunt man.
Sheriff Patrick Callahan said searchers were unable to located 39-year-old Curtis James who was reported missing from his home in Blunt Friday morning (March 7, 2025). He said deputies, first responders and volunteers conducted six days of active search efforts which included ground, air, K9 and water missions in and around the community of Blunt. Authorities do not believe there is any danger to the public.
James’ cell phone and other personal effects were found inside the home Friday and there was “no sign of any wrongdoing.” James is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and of a medium build.
Investigators continue to search for information concerning the where-a-bouts of James. Anyone with information is asked to immediately contact the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office at 605-773-7410 or any local law enforcement agency.
March 10, 2025:
No new information turned up over the weekend after searches were conducted for a 39 year old man from Blunt missing since Wednesday (March 5, 2025).
Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan says more than 70 volunteers showed up Saturday (March 8, 2025) to help search in and around the town for Curtis James, but had no success. On Sunday, the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department staff searched again, also with no new developments.
James is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and of a medium build.

Curtis James was last heard from around 9:30pm Wednesday (March 5, 2025).
Sheriff Patrick Callahan said deputies conducted a search of his home in Blunt early Friday (March 7, 2025). He said deputies found James’ cell phone and other personal effects inside the home and there was “no sign of any wrongdoing.”
