Two teams that were Championship favorites coming into the 2024-25 season, faced off in a Class B bracket flipped by upsets for a Consolation title. Both Parkston and Lyman had put together two terrific seasons, but were handed losses in the Quarterfinals on Thursday by Bennett County and Sanborn Central-Woonsocket. Both who just happen to be playing in the State Championship on the other side of the bracket.
The Consolation Championship was close as expected, both team supplying overwhelming defensive pressure and trading buckets the whole way throughout. Neither team could find their offensive footing until the second quarter, when Parkston took a three-point advantage into the halftime break.
The defense for both sides continued to play well in the second half, but Lyman won the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 14-12 and cutting the deficit to one to set up a cinematic final fourth quarter. But defense wins championships, and the Trojans dug in, holding Lyman to 7 fourth quarter points and holding on for a 38-35 win.
The Trojans were led by Lauren Zeibart and Keara Oakley who both finished with 10, and held the Raiders key scorers Mak & Jordan Scott to single-digits for what feels like the first time all season. Bree Smart led the Raiders with 10.
This ends the season for Lyman girls basketball, but now they get to become fans for the boys team who will compete in the State Tournament next week.
