It wasn’t an earthquake, a large vehicle running into the train bridge or the 4th of July, but there was a big boom a little after 9am CT Monday (March 17, 2025) in Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Audio PlayerThat’s the sound of the explosion that brought down the girders that had served as the foundation for the Lt. Cmdr. John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River between Pierre and Fort Pierre. Water craft and pedestrian passage under the structure may be limited for up to 24 hours while the contractor clears the area.
The new Waldron Memorial Bridge has been open for several months and the process to deconstruct the frame of the old bridge has slowly been happening ever since. Finishing touches can now be added to the new bridge located on U.S. Highways 14/83. City officials from both Pierre and Fort Pierre have plans to create a “plaza” area on their respective sides of the River, but specific timelines for those aren’t yet known.
