The City of Pierre is renewing its Memorandum of Understanding with the Pierre Public School District.
The new three-year agreement, approved by the Pierre City Commission at their March 11 meeting, provides the school district use of city facilities for sports team workouts, practices, and competitions.
Specifically, the city provides use and maintenance of the Griffin Park Tennis Courts and storm shelter, Hilgers Gulch and PILC Soccer Fields, Steamboat Park, and Hillsview Golf Course for the school tennis, soccer, cross country, and golf teams, respectively. Additionally, it makes the Pierre Aquatic Center available for physical education classes, as well as track and wrestling conditioning.
In exchange, the school will paint the soccer field lines as needed, pay $500 annually for the use of Hillsview Golf Course, and $2,000 annually for the use of the Pierre Aquatic Center.
Bryan Tipton, City Parks and Recreation Director said, “The small payments help us recover the cost of maintaining and staffing these facilities; there’s no intent for this to be a money-making operation.”
Pierre Mayor Steve Harding added that the city and the school district partner together for a variety of endeavors including summer recreation space, OaheTV coverage, and elections.
“Neither of us are positioned to fulfill all the wants of needs of all our constituents. These cooperative agreements help us meet the needs of the community together,” said Steve Harding.
Under this agreement, the Pierre Tennis Association also agrees to maintain the nets at Griffin Park Tennis Court.
The Pierre School Board has not yet taken action on the agreement.
