Friday afternoon was the annual Pierre Polar Plunge in support of SD Special Olympics, and it was a complete success! The turnout was spectacular for this years plunge, as there were 58 total plungers to make the jump. The donation goal was set for $20,000, and they blew past that raising north of $30,000!
I can report that the Missouri River is indeed cold in the middle of March, as this was my first year plunging. Thankfully, we had the great folks from the Pierre Fire Department acting as the rescue team, who were positioned in the water wearing their warming suits. The SD State Troopers & Pierre PD showed their support as well, as the first plunger was a State Trooper. The event was “Hawaii themed” and many of the plungers were wearing their leis and hula skirts. A warm theme for a cold river! Many of the members of the Pierre Wildcats, the SD Special Olympics athletes, braved the cold and made the plunge themselves.
You can still view the plunge on our website, and you can still help out SD Special Olympics by going to their website and getting involved! Pictures to come!
