No one was injured in a Sunday night (March 23, 2025) house fire roughly 15 miles east of Pierre.
Blunt Fire Department Chief Travis Heuertz told DRG Media Group that the fire was at the Carl and Joy Colson home, a little north of the Highways 14 and 83 junction east of Pierre.
Audio PlayerA wind advisory had been in effect in central South Dakota on Sunday, but Heuertz said fortunately the wind and the overnight drop in temperature didn’t interfere with their firefighting efforts.
Audio PlayerHeuertz said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.
Among the other agencies responding were the Pierre Rural and Onida volunteer fire departments, AMR ambulance service and the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office. The Hughes County Highway Department, CHS and Colson farms were among those that assisted by supplying water to refill the firetrucks.
