South Dakota State University Extension has released an updated version of its crop budgets tool.
Using South Dakota yield trends and typical commodity prices, the free tool is provided to help producers determine the preliminary cost of production for the major commodities grown in South Dakota – corn, soybeans and wheat. It is available to download at https://extension.sdstate.edu/
Producers and financial advisors can use the spreadsheets as a template to input their own costs and get an estimate on profits. The spreadsheet includes tabs for fertilizer and pesticide and commodity estimates for different regions of the state, including high- and low-production areas.
Sarah Sellars, assistant professor and SDSU Extension Sustainable Farm and Food Systems Specialist, said tools like this are especially helpful as farmers face tight margins due to high input costs and lower commodity prices.
“Especially in years like this, it’s important to look and plan ahead,” Sellars said. “It’s a really useful tool when planning for the 2025 crop year.”
